Beaches
Whether it’s for a twilight stroll, beach fishing at sunset, a leisurely swim or even if it's to take on the swell with your board, the Gold Coast's numerous beaches are famous for their golden sand, clean warm blue waters, and never ending sunshine. The most popular of the patrolled beaches on the Gold Coast include Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, Burleigh Heads, Kirra Beach and Tugan. Beach & Water Safety

Gold Coast beaches have the largest professional lifeguard service in Australia to protect its beaches and promote the surf safety message throughout its schools and community. A shark control program has also been implemented along the beaches for the safety of swimmers.

Whilst swimming you should never:

  • Swim alone or surf at beaches not patrolled by Lifeguards or Lifesavers

  • Bathe outside the red and yellow flags that mark safe swimming areas

  • Bathe directly after a meal or under the influence of alcohol

  • Bathe when the beach is closed.

  • Bathe when there are no safety flags

  • Panic if caught in a current or undertow, but raise one arm straight up and float until help arrives

  • Struggle if seized with a cramp, but raise one arm for help, float and keep the affected part of the body still

  • Go out far when a yellow flag is flying- it means the surf is dangerous

  • Bathe if unsure of safe conditions, but seek advice of the nearest Lifeguard

  • Struggle against a rip or current, but swim diagonally across it

Flags and signage

Two very important things to remember when swimming at the beach are:

  • Always swim between the red & yellow flag on patrolled beaches

  • Always read the Flags and Safety Signs and understand what they mean before entering the water.

Sunsmart Australians
have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.  Each year this almost totally preventable disease kills over 1400. Luckily, actions to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer are simple and effective… Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap…

Slip into a shirt – and between 11am and 4pm slip into some shade as this is when the ultraviolet rays are most fierce.

Slop on some sunscreen before going outdoors.

Slap on a hat with a brim or a cap with flaps. More people get burned on the face and neck than any other part of the body. Wrap on a pair of sunglasses. Choose close fitting, wrap-around glasses to protect your eyes from the suns harmful rays.
slip slop slap

• Put sunscreen on any skin not covered by clothes.
• Use an SPF30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen. Wipe it on thickly at least 15 minutes before going outdoors.
• Reapply after physical activity, swimming or towel drying.
• Sunscreen should not be used as a means of staying out in the sun longer,
but as a way to reduce the risk of sun damage to the skin when exposure to the summer sun is unavoidable.

sand castle Weather
The Gold Coast’s sub-tropical climate has plenty of sunshine year round and can boast an average of 245 days of fine weather each year. The average Summer temperatures range from 19 to 29 degrees Celsius (66 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit), with winter temperatures averaging from 9 to 21 degrees Celsius (48 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit).
